My husband Todd and I just got back from an epic Fall Foilage Roadtrip. Our trip was 10 days and we visited 8 different cities. We started in Massachusetts (Salem & Boston). Then we headed to Portland, Maine.
WHY VISIT?
While Portland, Maine might not be as popular as Portland, Oregon, it’s still a super cute coastal city to visit. I feel like it gives a great “taste” of Maine without having to travel super far North. Portland is known for it’s lobster rolls and beautiful lighthouses! It’s definitely a beautiful place to visit anytime of year!
WHERE TO STAY?
We decided to stay in an Airbnb to save money. Because we planned our trip so fast there weren’t a ton of options. We ended up staying in this cute private room, which I would definitely recommend. However, there were more affordable options, like this super cute apartment, as well as this beautiful loft.
If you have never used Airbnb, you really should give it a try! Often times I find it is cheaper to stay in a house than it is a one bedroom hotel room! Also, you often get to stay in the quaintest and coolest houses out there. If you would like to give Airbnb a try click on this link to get $40 dollars off your first booking!
WHERE TO EAT:
We were only in Portland for such a short time so we didn’t get to try a ton of places to eat but we made sure to hit up a few of the local favs.
Portland Lobster Company: This restaurant is known for its Lobster rolls, and we made sure to try one! Save your pennies though because Lobster rolls are not cheap (even though your close to the ocean!). However we definitely enjoyed it. Also, make sure to pick up some clam chowder!
P.S. this restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. If the temperature is nice enough sit outside because the view is beautiful!
The Holy Donut: These potato donuts are seriously to die for! I can’t say I’ve ever had donuts that tastes like these. We made sure to try one of their seasonal specials flavors, chai, as well as lemon and maple flavored donuts. We also picked up some coffee and apple cider. 100% recommend stopping here.
Arabica Coffee: Before we left, we stopped in here to get a coffee for the road! If you need your caffeine fix, make sure to stop in this cozy but huge cafe.
What to Do:
Sunrise at Portland Head Lighthouse: There are quite a few lighthouses around Portland area, but we had heard that the Portland Head Lighthouse was one we couldn’t miss at sunrise! We made sure to check the time of sunrise and get there a bit beforehand, and we were so shocked that we had the place totally to ourselves! I don’t know if this is normally the case, but we were stoked! Think golden-hour with a gorgeous view! We got so many beautiful pictures but I paired it down so that I wouldn’t overwhelm you all!
Berlin Wall: Okay, I know that this isn’t a Germany travel guide, but it turns out that Portland has its very own little chunk of the Berlin Wall! This is super close to the Portland Lobster Company if you happen to grab a bite to eat there.
Visit the L.L. Bean Store & Outlet: L.L. Bean is seriously the brand of the Northeast! While there are definitely a lot of locations, make sure you check out the outlet store in Freeport. If you have more time, shop around in the area, there are lots of great stores! Oh and snag a pic by the boot. (This store is slightly out of Portland, but not a long drive!)
Explore the Old Port: The Old Port is obviously right on the coast and has a lot of neat shops and restaurants to eat at. Most of the above mentioned activities are in the Old Port Area. P. S. expect to pay for parking when you go!
