Todd and I were blessed with the privilege to travel all the way to Key West with the Senior class at my school. I teach at a small Christian school, so our Senior class is only 4 students this year. (Our school is growing like crazy though!). Because of our small class size, we were able to take an awesome trip and go on lots of fun adventures!
To plan the Senior trip, I searched Pinterest and blogs like crazy to find the best of Key West. Also, I wanted to find the activities the kids would actually be interested in.
We started our vacation at the Fort Zachary Taylor Park and Beach.
Our trip was a 16 hour drive, so we were aching to just be out of a car!
Beautiful blue water, a rocky beach, a cute restaurant on the beach, and a shaded area for picnic, this beach has just about anything you need.
WARNING: it’s rocky. Meaning the sand isn’t necessarily soft. I recommend water shoes if you have them.
Fort Zachary Taylor is a state park, so it costs a few dollars to go in, but just about everywhere in Key West you will pay for parking, so it was worth it.
After we soaked up some sun, we walked over to the actual fort; it is very close to the beach.
Afterwards, We went to Kermit’s Key Lime Shoppe on Duval Street.
Let me tell you…the chocolate dipped key lime pie is to die for! Also, we went back another day and got the blueberry key lime pie and it was also really good. We got key lime at quite a few place and nothing was as good as it was here!
Then we finished the evening by going down to Mallory Square to the Sunset Celebration.
At Mallory Square we helped a local pastor who sets up as a “street performer” 3 times a week. He does a gospel presentation through an art/word game that pulls people in.
It was an awesome experience and really opened our eyes to the different ways people feel about Christianity.
The next day we drove to Marathon and visited the Sea Turtle Hospital. You start out with a presentation about sea turtle and then they take you around the facility to see all their residents!
Our visit to the hospital really made me want to rescue a sea turtle, because if you do you get to name one! Notice below, Smelly Cat. Also another favorite name was Little Fat Brianna. lol!
The babies were my FAVORITE!
We then once again ended our evening at Mallory Square! Mallory Square is also a great place to pick up local made items and delicious food!
The next day was our busiest day! We woke up early and headed to the Southern Most Point of the U.S.
We then made our way over to this delicious donut shop called Glazed Donuts.
I got the milk and cream flavor I believe and Todd got the maple and bacon. Both were delicious (but I recommend the flavor I got!)
Then we set out on the 9:30 snorkel trip! This was pretty much everyone’s first time snorkeling and it was really exciting, but took some getting used to. I didn’t actually look in the water for about 5 minutes after I jumped in just because I was practicing breathing! lol.
We went snorkeling with Fury, and had a great experience! I would definitely recommend them.
Sadly both Todd and I got a little sea sick from snorkeling, but we recovered shortly. However, the kids that stayed in a bit longer than us got to see a Nurse shark!
I’ll be sharing the second part of our Key West trip on my next post!
Thanks for stopping by! I hope this post helps in you are planning a trip to Key West! Feel free to ask any questions about the area. 🙂
