Hey guys it’s my favorite post of the month where I share with you what I read! June was an amazing month of reading! Seriously, every single one of these should be added right now to your TBR!
If you need more book recommendations you can check out what I’ve read in the past by checking out my previous book reviews here or if you want to follow along with me in real time to see what I’m reading you can follow me on Goodreads.
First up was An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. This was a throwback for me because the Dystopian YA genre used to be my jam! If you are a fan of books like Divergent and Hunger Games then you would enjoy this book. I picked it up because I saw a lot of people reviewing this series and loving it. The society in this book is not like our own. There is a ruling class called the Martials (pretty much like warriors) and everyone else is pretty much a slave. Of course you have two young people you follow along with who are not in favor of the current system. This was a great fast moving book. I already have the second one in the series waiting for me to read in July!

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen follows a woman who is depressed because of her ex currently being engaged to a new woman. Of course the story is more complex than that, but if I told you more than it would ruin the surprise! I heard a lot of people saying this book was too similar to The Last Mrs. Parrish, and while I see the similarity, the story itself was still different enough that I could enjoy it. Although, I honestly am having a hard time remembering the details of this story (it just didn’t stick with me), but I did enjoy it while I was reading it. There was also a time when I audibly gasped because I was so shocked at the turn of events.

Something in the Water by Catherine Steadman came on my radar because of the Reese Witherspoon book club. I was shocked that I was able to receive this from my library so quickly! This book would be a great beach read, because it’s a thriller that follows a newlywed couple on their honeymoon that is now suddenly faced with a very difficult situation. This thriller would make a great bookclub discussion too because it has you asking what you would do if you were in their shoes. This book also has a few twists and turns which makes it extra fun to read!
Rating: 5/5 Stars
The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner is a book I would not normally gravitate to because it is a memoir, however once I heard that it was about a polygamist cult on a podcast I was listening to, I knew it was a book I would find interesting. This book is written by Ruth, who actually escaped the polygamist cult she was in when she was only 16 with her younger siblings! I will put a warning out there that this book does deal with some tough subjects: death, abuse, etc. So if those are triggers I would stay away, however this book does offer hope, and is beautifully written!
Rating: 5/5 stars
Last but not least is Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn. This was actually my first Flynn book (I know…I’ve never read Gone Girl, it’s truly shocking!) This novel follows a reporter who returns to her hometown and her dysfunctional family to investigate murders that have been happening in the small town. This book is a bit creepier than most of the thrillers that I read, and also deals with the tough subject of self-harm (hence the name of the book). However, the story is one that will keep you up late reading more, and of course it is not shy of twists and turns.
