My husband Todd and I recently got back from an epic Fall Foilage Roadtrip. Our trip was 10 days and we visited 8 different cities. We started in Massachusetts (Salem & Boston). Then we headed to Portland & Bar Harbor, Maine, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and Vermont. Our next stop was Lake Placid, NY!
Why Visit?
Lake Placid not only the name of a famous movie, but it’s also a hub for winter sports. It was home to the 1980 Olympic Winter games. It also is surrounded by the beautiful Adirondack mountains which are great for hiking and absolutely beautiful in the Fall!
Where to Stay?
The Lake House: We decided to stay at The Lake House Resort, which is a super cute/modern hotel right on the main strip of Lake Placid. Excellent accommodations and location!
Where to Eat:
The Cottage: After we went on a long hike, we were starving and ended up at this charming restaurant. We got the buffalo dip and flatbreads. Everything looked delicious on the menu and I highly recommend this place not only for the food, but also for the view!
The Breakfast Club Etc: Todd and I both named this our best breakfast of the whole trip! The view, the food, the menu options, everything was just so perfect! I highly recommend the Unicorn hot chocolate and Apple Sausage and Brie BC rotis I got!
What to Do:
We wanted to spend so much more time in Lake Placid area, because their are so many outdoorsy things to do! Sadly our time was short, so we made the best of our time that we could!
Ride the Lake Champlain Ferry: So this is something we stumbled on. We were driving in the morning from VT to NY and I realized we had a toll up ahead so I started trying to gather money, but then I realized it was showing a picture of a boat! Todd and I had never driven on a ferry before and while this was a necessity to get to where we were going, it was also a lot of fun! We were able to get out and look around once our cars were parked!
Boots: Amazon
Adirondack Popcorn Co.: Make sure to shop around the main strip of Lake Placid; there are lots of cute stops, including this Popcorn store! Stop in for some super unique flavors, including a USA one!
Pullover: Patagonia
Hat: Kneedles and Love code: KASEY15 for 15% off
Leggings: Aerie
Boots: here & similar
Indian Head Hike: Sorry for the pic overload, but boy oh boy was this view totally worth it! This hike (including the short hike below) took us a good half of the day, and was a total of 11 miles long.
If you plan on going, here are a few tips you might want to remember. Follow the parking directions (you have to park about 1 mile from the trial head) otherwise you will get a ticket. Get their early or go on a week day to get a parking spot. Rainbow Falls (below) is optional, but short and is a great add on. If you are tired on the way back, walk the road, not the trail (it’s a fairly rocky path back). Track your route on AllTrails, because it really helps you know how far along you are and if you are on the right track (sometimes it was a little confusing).
Overall this is a great hike and was a huge highlight of our trip!
Rainbow Falls: Also located in the same area as Indian Head, Rainbow Falls is a short but rocky hike out to this gorgeous water Fall. We definitely recommend adding it on to your hike to Indian Head, or if you just need a quick hike, you could start here. Make sure you follow the parking advice mentioned above!
