It feels like forever since I’ve done a Recent Reads post, but really it’s only been since September! I haven’t done as much reading as I would have hoped this Fall, however, I have been enjoying the season, so I’m not too mad about it.
I’ve read six books since we last chatted and even though I liked them all, I don’t think any of them will go down as my all time favs.
The Invited by Jennifer Mcmahon
The Invited was the perfect book for spooky season. I actually saw that it was classified as “horror” however, I myself would not put it in the category. The story follows a couple who start building a house on “haunted land.” There is talk of a treasure, and much work goes into learning the history of the land. I enjoyed the story, but I do remember thinking it moved a bit slow at times.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
I’m probably the last person in the bookish community to read Eleanor Oliphant, but I put it off for so long cause it didn’t sound like something I would completely love, and I was right. This one took me forever to listen to (which I think was part of the problem…I wasn’t a huge fan of the narration). Overall, the plot, following Eleanor a woman who struggles with social skills, was enjoyable enough, but it just wasn’t “my type of book” if you know what I mean. Although, a lot of other people have adored this book, so don’t write it off completely.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert
Todd and I picked this book to listen to on our Fall road trip. We had 10 hours in the car one way and knew we wanted a book we could both enjoy. This story follows a girl named Alice, whose Grandma is a famous book that has a cult-like following. The more she starts to learn about the book, the stranger her world gets. This book is definitely in the Fantasy genre, and while we both enjoyed the story, we felt like the ending did not give us all the answers we desired.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris
I have read so many WWII historical fiction, sometimes I get a bit picky about which one is best. While the storyline of this one was a bit simple, it was a sweet story of a boy and a girl falling in love in Auschwitz. What makes the story even better, is that is was true! This is a quick read that I would definitely recommend to anyone who enjoyed WWII books, or even just a sweet love story.

The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman
Do you ever pick up a book because you feel like you need to read something that is light and fluffy and won’t keep you up late at night? Well if so, then this is the book for you! It’s nothing life changing, but the patterns and habits of Nina Hill are very relatable to many book-lovers. This is a cute PG/PG-13 love story of a girl that is introverted, highly organized, and in love with books.

I never thought I would be reading the Shining, it wasn’t on my TBR at all. However, Todd and I were on the way back from our trip and wanted to listen to another book on audio. Again, we tried to pick something we both would enjoy. Todd finds Stephen King stories interesting and we both had never read one of his books, so we decided to give it a try. The story follows a family that move into a hotel high in the mountains to be the caretakers of a hotel that shuts down in the winter because of the high amount of snow the area gets. The little boy has a special gift, called “The Shining” where he is able to see things others can’t. The hotel has many secrets and the little boy begins to learn them. It was definitely long, definitely a bit weird, and not what I thought. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it. I truly felt meh about it. I know though that many call this their favorite King novel!
