Hey friends! Todd and I made a big decision in the past few months and it has been killing me not to blog about it! We bought a house! Most of you probably already know this because of my Instagram post, but I wanted to share more of the details!
First of all, we decided to buy a house because in August we met our goal of paying off all college debt (more on that in another post). We knew we didn’t want to go more in debt when we still had college payments, so we waited for looking at houses till that was paid off.
We also did not save up a huge down payment. I know, I know everyone advises on that, but we had been renting for two and a half years, so we knew that in order to have the recommended 20% down it would take us quite a few more years to save that up, and we were going to need more space. So we either would need to find a bigger home to rent which would increase rent, or buy a house and pay the same amount monthly but build equity, so we went with buying.
It’s also so great now to have a property that we care about improving and investing in. That’s been really fun, and something we didn’t do with our rental obviously.
Also, let’s be real, we want a dog, and we couldn’t buy a dog while renting (okay obviously not our main reason, but a total perk!)
Also, the housing market around where we live seems to be rising. Just from purchase to appraisal, we closed with 5,000 in equity on this house! That was super encouraging.
So we started looking for house towards the end of August, early September and closed mid-October. We put offers on two other houses, but honestly, If I had the option of all three, I would chose the one we got. We are super happy with the location, the character, and the all around lay-out of the house!
One of the things that absolutely sold us on buying the house we got is that it was a flip house, meaning we didn’t even have to paint! We toyed with the idea of buying a house to flip, but honestly it has been so nice having a house that is move in ready and already in the style we like. Todd likes to say it looks like “Pinterest threw up in here” hahahah!
If you want to see the full tour of our home, you can check out my Instagram highlights where I shared a video house tour right when we moved in!
One of my favorite parts of the house was the kitchen, even though it is smaller, I love the styling of it, and I’m really enjoying getting to decorate these open shelves!
I also love the huge window in our dining room, I mean just look at this view! I’m so excited to see it when it snows!
We had a lot of sweet friends and family help us move in! We are still getting settled and I’m really hesitant to hang anything on the wall until I know I will definitely want it there!
Also, we have made a few fun purchases!
We got a new bed! Our old one sunk down in the middle, so while we waited on the new one to arrive we slept on the floor for the first few weeks!
But now thankfully we have upgraded to a platform bed that we purchased here (I love this mid century style). Warning though, if you do buy this bed, it takes awhile to put together! Also, we also bought a Nectar mattress. It was so fun because it came in the mail and expanded overnight! Super easy and affordable.
I’m still not sure though if I like the Nectar mattress, as of right now I’ve only slept on it one night. I was not a fan of the memory foam pillow; it kept me awake. However, I think I will get used to and eventually really like the Nectar mattress (Todd already absolutely loves it)!
We also bought a few fun new furniture pieces from Homegoods. I obviously won’t be able to link the exact ones, but I will link some similar options as well as some other pieces we are currently eyeing!
P.S. our bedding is from Target, but I’m think it’s currently sold out, however they still have it online here.
Love this dresser for our bedroom! We plan to set our smaller t.v. on it.
Also got two of these fun side tables. As of right now we have one in our bedroom and one in the living room, but that might eventually change.
Last new piece is this fun little corner shelf. It totally screams put plants on me! lol
Next up we are going to buy blinds and some rugs! Leave me in the comments any good online rug retailers that you know of that may carry the style of rugs we like (we like the mid-century boho look).
Thank you for stopping by!
